Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky, another psychologist, talks about how we’re attracted to people who are nice, generous, and thankful. She says, “We like being around people who are good because they make us feel happy.”

Research on Admiration

Studies show that feeling admiration can make us feel better and help us get along with others. Dr. Jonathan Haidt, a scientist, says, “Thinking highly of others can help us feel connected and grateful, which makes us happier.”

Research by Dr. Dacher Keltner suggests that when we look up to others, we’re more likely to help each other and be kind. He says, “Thinking highly of others helps us get along better and be nicer to each other.”

Cultural and Societal Perspectives

In different places, we admire people who are honorable, wise, and unselfish. Dr. Robert Cialdini, who studies how people are influenced by society, says, “What we think is good depends on where we are and what the people around us think.”

Overall, admiring others is about seeing good things in them and feeling good about it. It helps us feel connected, happy, and kind to each other.
