“Beware then of useless grumbling and keep your tongue from slander; because no secret word is without result and a lying mouth destroys the soul.”
Wisdom 1: 11
In this verse, the author advises against two harmful behaviours: useless grumbling and slander. Useless grumbling refers to complaining or expressing dissatisfaction without any constructive purpose. Slander involves spreading false or damaging information about others.
The verse highlights that our words have consequences. Even secret words, those spoken in private or behind closed doors, can have results. This implies that our thoughts and words are not hidden from God and can impact our lives and the lives of others.
The warning against a lying mouth destroying the soul underscores the destructive nature of dishonesty and deceit. Lying not only harms others but also damages our integrity and spiritual well-being.
The verse urges us to refrain from harmful languages, such as complaining or spreading falsehoods, and instead encourages us to use our words for good, uplifting others and promoting truth and righteousness.
This verse, serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity, honesty, and the power of our words. It prompts reflection on how we communicate with others and the impact our words can have on ourselves and those around us.
By striving to speak truthfully, kindly, and positively, we can contribute to a more harmonious and virtuous community.
