A Journey of Sacred Discovery

How can we cultivate a spirit of reverence and humility, recognizing the sacredness inherent in every human being?

“Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.”

1 Corinthians 3: 16-17

Paul tells the Corinthians something very special: “Don’t you know that you are God’s home and that God’s Spirit lives in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16). He’s saying that each person is like a special place where God’s Spirit lives.

This idea goes back to the Old Testament, where God tells Moses to build a special tent called the Tabernacle. God wanted to be close to His people, so He lived in the Tabernacle.

Jesus talks about this too. He says, “Break down this temple, and I will rebuild it in three days” (John 2:19). He means His own body, showing that God’s presence is not just in buildings but in people too.

Paul wants everyone to understand that each person is like a temple because God’s Spirit lives in them. So, it’s important to take care of ourselves and treat others with respect because we’re special to God. Paul warns against doing things that hurt ourselves or others because God takes it seriously.

To honor God’s presence in us, we need to be humble, and kind, and take care of ourselves and others. People like Augustine, Henri Nouwen, and Richard J. Foster have talked about how important it is to connect with God’s Spirit inside us through prayer and good actions.

Understanding these verses helps us see that we are special to God, and we should treat ourselves and others with love and respect. When we realize this, we can live our lives with purpose and kindness, bringing hope and healing to the world around us.
