“So give for alms those things that are within; and see, everything will be clean for you.”
Luke 11: 41
This blog post tries to explain a Bible verse, Luke 11:41, in a way that relates to our lives today.
It talks about how some people in the past, called Pharisees,( The Pharisees were a Jewish sect known for their strict adherence to religious laws and traditions. Ritual purity was a significant concern, and handwashing was seen as essential before meals to avoid contamination. Jesus challenges this by emphasizing the importance of inner purity over outward rituals.)focused too much on looking good on the outside, like washing their hands a lot, but didn’t care much about being kind and helpful on the inside. Jesus said it’s more important to be generous and caring from the heart.
The post encourages us to think about why we do good things and to be genuinely kind to others, not just to impress people. It suggests that being truly clean means having a good heart, not just following rules on the outside.
Imagine this: you’re invited to a fancy dinner party. The host insists everyone meticulously washes their hands before eating, even for the tiniest crumb. But then someone whispers, “Hey, their tablecloth is stained!” That’s kind of what’s happening in Luke 11.
The Pharisees were sticklers for outward rituals like handwashing, neglecting the real issue: their hearts. Jesus throws them a curveball: “Give alms from within” (v. 41).
Here’s the breakdown:
Alms: Refers to charitable gifts given to the poor.
Those things that are within: This refers to one’s possessions (“give from your heart”) or a more metaphorical sense of one’s true character (“be generous, compassionate”.
This isn’t just ancient history. We all fall into the trap of focusing on appearances – the perfect prayer life, volunteering for the “right” causes. But Jesus challenges us to dig deeper. Are our actions driven by genuine care, or just a desire to look good?
So, how do we live this out?
Check your motives: Why do you go to church? Volunteer? Is it for the love of God and others, or to impress someone (or yourself)?
Be a real giver: Giving goes beyond money. Offer your time, talents, or simply a listening ear to those in need.
Inner transformation leads to action: A heart filled with love naturally overflows in acts of service and compassion.
Remember, true cleanness isn’t about external rituals. It’s about letting your inner light shine through in genuine acts of love. Now that’s something worth celebrating, no matter how messy the tablecloth gets!
