Name the professional athletes you respect the most and why.
What I’ve come to understand over time is that the athletes I respect the most aren’t the ones who win. They’re the ones who show resilience when things get tough, who handle victory with humility and defeat with grace. They’re the ones who use their platform to give back, to inspire, and to lead by example.
Name the Professional Athletes I Respect the Most and Why
Introduction: A Reflection on Time and Inspiration
As a lifelong fan of sports, I’ve always found myself inspired by professional athletes. Whether it’s the thrill of watching a world record being broken or the personal stories of resilience, these athletes have shaped the way I view both sports and life. But as time has passed, I’ve noticed that my perspectives on these athletes have evolved, and the reasons why I admire them have grown deeper.
When WordPress presented me with the same prompt from last year – “Name the professional athletes you respect the most and why” – it felt like more than just a coincidence. A year ago, I reflected on this question and shared the athletes who had inspired me up to that point. Today, I see this as an opportunity to reflect on how my respect for these athletes has shifted and grown. So, let me take you on this journey with me.
The Nature of Respect in Sports
When I think about why I respect certain athletes, it’s easy to focus on their victories, records, and championships. But over the years, I’ve realized that true respect goes beyond just their athletic achievements. It’s not about who scores the most points or wins the most medals; it’s about their character – how they handle adversity, how they lead, and what they stand for.
For me, respect in sports is more about the values athletes embody. Perseverance, resilience, leadership, and integrity – these are the traits that make me admire them, not just the titles they’ve won.
Athletes Who Continue to Inspire (Reflecting on Last Year’s List)
Last year, I highlighted a few iconic athletes who had already earned my admiration. As I revisit them now, I find that my respect for them has only deepened.
- Usain Bolt: I’ve always been in awe of his speed, but what impresses me more now is how he’s used his platform to support causes in his home country of Jamaica. Bolt has remained humble despite his global fame, and that humility is something I deeply respect.
- LeBron James: His dominance on the basketball court is one thing, but it’s his efforts off the court, particularly in education and social justice, that have truly solidified my respect for him. LeBron’s “I PROMISE School” and his activism show me that leadership isn’t confined to a game – it’s about making a lasting impact on future generations.
- Serena Williams: As she steps into retirement, Serena’s legacy as one of the greatest athletes of all time is undeniable. But what stands out to me is her advocacy for women’s empowerment and racial equality. She has shown the world that being a champion isn’t just about winning titles – it’s about using your voice to create change.
- Lionel Messi: When Messi lifted the World Cup trophy last year, it felt like the culmination of years of hard work and dedication. But what I admire most about him is his humility and grace. Even after achieving everything in football, Messi remains grounded, and that humility is what makes him a true champion in my eyes.
New Athletes Who Have Earned My Respect Over the Past Year
Over the past year, I’ve discovered new athletes whose courage, resilience, and determination have left a lasting impact on me.
- Simone Biles: I’ll never forget her decision to prioritize her mental health during the Olympics. In a world that often places performance above well-being, her courage to step back sparked a global conversation about mental health in sports. Simone’s bravery in advocating for herself and others is something I deeply admire.
- Novak Djokovic: This past year has been filled with both controversy and triumph for Djokovic, but his resilience has been undeniable. Despite facing numerous challenges, he continues to dominate the world of tennis, and that inner strength is something I’ve come to respect.
- Ellie Simmonds: As a Paralympian swimmer, Simmonds has not only broken barriers in her sport but has also become a powerful advocate for inclusivity in athletics. Her determination to succeed, despite the odds, is a reminder that greatness isn’t defined by physical abilities but by heart and drive.
- Megan Rapinoe: Rapinoe’s fierce advocacy for gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights, and social justice is what sets her apart. She’s shown me that athletes can use their platform to fight for what’s right, and I respect her willingness to take a stand, even when it’s not easy.
Unsung Heroes of Sports
While I admire the big names, there are also countless unsung heroes in the world of sports who may never make the headlines but still leave a mark. Marathon runners, extreme climbers, and local sports champions – these are the people who embody the true spirit of perseverance and dedication. Their stories remind me that respect isn’t reserved for the biggest names but for anyone who pushes themselves to be their best, regardless of the spotlight.
Character Over Victory: What Athletes Teach Us About Life

What I’ve come to understand over time is that the athletes I respect the most aren’t the ones who win. They’re the ones who show resilience when things get tough, who handle victory with humility and defeat with grace. They’re the ones who use their platform to give back, to inspire, and to lead by example.
From Usain Bolt’s humility to Serena Williams’ unwavering commitment to equality, these athletes have taught me that success is about so much more than just winning. It’s about who you are as a person and how you use your influence to make the world a better place.
Final Thoughts: Evolving Respect for Athletes
As I reflect on how my respect for athletes has evolved over time, I’ve come to realize that their societal contributions and personal growth are far more important than their titles or records. These athletes challenge me to think about the qualities I truly admire, and they inspire me to be a better person in my own life.
Conclusion
The athletes I respect the most have shown me that the journey to greatness isn’t just about personal achievement – it’s about resilience, leadership, and the ability to make a positive impact. Their stories remind me that success is a combination of talent, hard work, and character.
Now, as I think back on my journey as a sports fan, I’m reminded that the athletes I admire most aren’t just champions in their respective sports – they’re champions in life. And I invite you to reflect on the athletes who inspire you. What qualities do you admire, and how do they inspire you to be your best, both on and off the field?

Very nice article with sharing this 🛍️

This article was very inspiring overall. Seeing the list of players that bring inspiration beyond the game is very pleasing, as seeing stars like Lebron James and Serena Williams is not a surprise as they inspired many young boys and girls to have the opportunity to play the same sport as they do. This generation has many young stars within the game and seeing leagues across the nation (MLB, NFL, NBA) all have players who want to bring new people towards the sport because they care about the future of their respective sports. For me, an inspirational player that has done great work beyond the game is Quarterback Russell Wilson, as during his free time during the days between game weeks, him and his wife visit children’s hospitals and spend time with fans where they talk, play games with them and sign autographs, and no matter what city he plays in, he makes time for the kids no matter what.
