When you think of the word “successful,” who’s the first person that comes to mind and why?
When I think of the word “successful,” the first person that comes to mind is my great-grandfather. His success wasn’t marked by wealth or fame, but by his unwavering kindness, resilience, and ability to find joy in simple moments. He taught me that true success lies in living a life of meaning, integrity, and love—lessons that continue to shape me to this day.
We often think of success as grandeur, wealth, or public acclaim — yet some of the most influential people in our lives never show up on stages or in headlines. What if success is quietly woven through everyday gestures, resilience in hardship, and legacies that ripple beyond our lifetime? In this reflection, I invite you to meet the unseen heroes—the ones whose impact is profound not because they shouted, but because they lived consistently.
Introduction:
Success. When you hear the word, what comes to mind? For most of us, the image of a well-known entrepreneur, a celebrity, or someone with material wealth and fame might surface. It’s easy to fall into that narrative—after all, society often equates success with external achievements. I’m guilty of it, too.
I once wrote about Pat Flynn and his incredible journey as an entrepreneur when asked the same question—who comes to mind when you think of success? But as time passed and I revisited the prompt one year later, I felt the need to dig deeper. This time, I’m not drawn to the idea of success as wealth or public recognition. Instead, I’m thinking about something quieter, something closer to home—about the unseen heroes in our lives who embody success in ways we rarely notice.
1. Success in the Ordinary: A Personal Perspective
Let me start by telling you about my great-grandfather. To the world, he was an ordinary man—a farmer in a small village who never made headlines or amassed great wealth. But to me, he was the most successful person I’ve ever known.
He didn’t measure his life by the size of his bank account or the accolades on his wall. His success lay in the values he lived by: his unwavering kindness, his resilience through tough times, and his ability to cultivate joy in the simplest of moments. I remember him working in the fields under the blistering sun, never complaining, always grateful. And when he sat down with us at the end of the day, sharing stories over a simple meal, I realized that true success doesn’t need a spotlight. It’s about living a life of meaning, integrity, and love.
His success was the kind that shaped me without me even realizing it at the time. It’s only now, years later, that I recognize the profound impact he had on my life.
2. Shifting the Definition: Success as Resilience
When I think about success today, I see it in a different light. It’s no longer about what you have; it’s about what you overcome.
Take, for instance, my neighbour—an incredible woman who has faced more challenges than most of us could ever imagine. She’s a single mother working two jobs, and juggling endless responsibilities, yet she shows up every day for her children with love and strength. Her success isn’t in the money she earns or the status she holds—it’s in her resilience, and her ability to face adversity with grace and determination.
For a long time, I thought success was something you achieved after reaching a particular milestone. But now, I understand that success is the journey itself, especially when the road is tough. It’s about showing up, day after day when no one is watching. Resilience, in this sense, is the most powerful and enduring form of success.
3. Community and Collective Success
Another lesson I’ve learned about success is that it isn’t always individual. We often focus so much on personal accomplishments that we forget about the success stories happening all around us—within our communities, among groups of people working together for a shared cause.
During a difficult time in our town, when floods threatened to destroy homes, I witnessed an outpouring of support from people I’d never even spoken to. Neighbours opened their doors, shared food and resources, and helped each other rebuild. I saw success in the power of community, in the collective effort to rise above hardship.
Success, in this context, is about coming together. It’s about realizing that our achievements are interconnected and that sometimes, the most meaningful success is found in what we can accomplish as a group.
4. Spiritual Success: A Higher Calling
As I’ve grown older, I’ve started to understand that there’s a deeper level to success, one that goes beyond the physical and material. Spiritual success—the kind that brings inner peace and fulfilment—often gets overlooked in our fast-paced world, but I’ve found it to be the most rewarding kind of success.
I’ve been deeply inspired by the teachings of my faith, particularly Romans 12:4-5, which speaks to the idea that we are all part of something larger than ourselves. Each of us has a unique purpose, a role to play in the grand scheme of life. Spiritual success comes from recognizing this, from living a life that’s true to your values, and from contributing to something greater than your ambitions.
There are countless examples of people who have chosen this path. Monks who dedicate their lives to contemplation, spiritual leaders who guide others, and even everyday people who find joy in serving their communities. They may not have conventional success, but their spiritual fulfilment is undeniable.
5. Success Beyond Time: Legacy and Impact
One of the most humbling realizations I’ve had is that true success doesn’t always manifest in our lifetimes. Sometimes, our actions today create ripples that will only be felt long after we’re gone.
I often think about people like my grandmother, who spent her life caring for others without ever seeking recognition. She never made headlines, but her legacy—the lives she touched, the lessons she imparted—continues to inspire even now, years after her passing.
This kind of success is timeless. It’s about planting seeds that will grow long after we’re gone. It’s about leaving behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and kindness.
6. Redefining Success for Ourselves: A Call to Action
So, here’s the question I ask myself today: How do I redefine success for my own life? And how can I encourage others to do the same?
Success isn’t something that needs to be measured by societal standards. It’s deeply personal, and it changes as we grow. For me, success is now about living authentically, staying true to my values, and making a positive impact in the lives of those around me—whether that impact is seen or unseen.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that we need to celebrate success in all its forms. Whether it’s the quiet success of showing up each day with resilience, the collective success of a community, or the spiritual success of inner peace, it’s all worth honouring.
I encourage you, as I’ve encouraged myself, to rethink your definition of success. Start by celebrating the small wins, recognizing the people who have impacted you, and finding fulfilment in the things that truly matter.
Conclusion:
Success is a word that has taken on so many different meanings throughout my life. At one point, it was about achievements and recognition. But now, as I reflect on the people who have shaped me, the lessons I’ve learned, and the legacy I hope to leave behind, I realize that success is so much more than what the world tells us.
It’s in the unseen heroes, the quiet strength, the moments of resilience, and the lives we touch without even realizing it. Today, I choose to redefine success, and I invite you to do the same.
Who is the first person that comes to mind when you think of success? Maybe it’s not a celebrity or a billionaire. Maybe it’s someone much closer to home.
