What If You Made Biryani Without Rice, Using Kappa (Tapioca) & Pesto?

A Culinary Reflection

What are your family’s top 3 favorite meals?

Our family’s top 3 favourite meals are Traditional Indian Fish Curry, a comforting dish with deep-rooted memories, Pasta Primavera with Pesto, a fresh and healthy favourite, and Biryani, a rich, aromatic dish that adds joy to any gathering. Each meal represents warmth, love, and shared memories.

What Are Your Family’s Top 3 Favorite Meals? A Fresh Perspective

Introduction

As I settled in to respond to today’s WordPress prompt—“What are your family’s top 3 favourite meals?”—a smile naturally spread across my face.

This same question appeared exactly one year ago, and back then, I wrote about three meals that have always been close to my heart: Traditional Indian Fish Curry, Chicken Stir-Fry, and Grilled Salmon with Roasted Vegetables.

These dishes represent a mix of comfort, nostalgia, and health-conscious choices. But something struck me this year—our favourites have evolved. Meals aren’t simply about taste; they reflect our changing lives, preferences, and the moments we share around the table. So, instead of sticking to last year’s list, I decided to revisit the question with a fresh lens.

Culinary Journeys Through Time

Food has always been the centrepiece of my family’s story. I think back to my childhood, where every meal was an occasion. Whether it was a weekday dinner or a festive spread, the table was where laughter, stories, and sometimes even debates unfolded.

Over the years, our tastes have shifted. What was once a must-have—like a traditional Sunday chicken roast—has been replaced by lighter, more diverse options. Our dining table has become a fusion of tradition and experimentation. Each dish now tells a story, not just of our family’s history but also of where we are today.

This Year’s Top 3 Favorites

Kappa and Fish Curry

1. Kappa and Fish Curry
Some things never change, and Kappa (tapioca) with spicy fish curry remains a beloved favourite in our household. There’s something magical about the combination of the creamy, starchy kappa and the tangy, fiery fish curry.

I remember a recent rainy afternoon when we all gathered in the kitchen, peeling tapioca and debating whose recipe for fish curry was better. By the time the meal was ready, we were laughing so hard that we didn’t care which version we followed. Kappa and Fish Curry isn’t food; it’s a reminder of how food brings us together.

Pasta with Creamy Pesto Sauce

2. Pasta with Creamy Pesto Sauce
This year, a surprising addition joined our list—pasta with creamy pesto sauce. It started with my youngest family member discovering the joys of basil and pine nuts. What began as a “let’s try this” moment turned into a family favourite.

It’s quick to prepare, vibrant in flavour, and perfect for those busy weekday nights. More than that, it’s become a meal we associate with creativity—adding sun-dried tomatoes one day or grilled chicken the next. It’s a dish that adapts to our moods, much like our family itself.

Vegetable Biryani

3. Vegetable Biryani
Vegetable Biryani is more than a dish; it’s a celebration. The fragrant rice, infused with spices and layered with colourful vegetables, has become our go-to for festive occasions.

What I love most about biryani is the ritual of making it. It’s a family affair—someone chops the vegetables, someone soaks the rice, and someone (usually me) watches the pressure cooker like a hawk. By the time we sit down to eat, the aroma has filled every corner of the house, and we’re all ready to dive in.

The Evolution of Family Favorites

It’s fascinating how our food choices evolve. A year ago, I couldn’t have predicted that pesto pasta would make it to our list, but life has a way of surprising us. Travel, health-conscious decisions, and even seasonal ingredients have all played a role in shaping our meals.

Yet, some things remain constant. The comfort of familiar flavours, the joy of cooking together, and the connection we feel when sharing a meal are timeless. It’s this blend of old and new that keeps our table vibrant.

What Makes a Dish Special?

For me, a family favourite isn’t about taste. It’s about the emotions tied to it. A meal becomes special when it sparks a memory, whether it’s the sound of laughter, the warmth of togetherness, or even the silence of contentment as everyone savours each bite.

It’s also about adaptability. A good dish grows with your family, allowing for tweaks, twists, and personal touches. That’s why even a simple plate of pasta can carry as much weight as a traditional curry.

A Call to Action for Readers

Now it’s your turn. Take a moment to think about your family’s top 3 favourite meals. Are they the same as last year? Have they changed? If you’re feeling adventurous, why not try one of my family’s picks—Kappa and Fish Curry, Pasta with Creamy Pesto Sauce, or Vegetable Biryani?

Share your favourites in the comments. Let’s inspire each other with the stories behind our meals. After all, food is more than sustenance; it’s a celebration of life and connection.

Conclusion

As I reflect on this year’s choices, I’m reminded of the joy that food brings to our lives. Whether it’s a traditional recipe passed down through generations or a new experiment that becomes a staple, every dish has a story to tell.

Thank you, WordPress, for giving me the chance to revisit this prompt and reflect on how our family’s meals have evolved. It’s a reminder that, much like life, food is an ever-changing journey.

Family meals did change over the years after it was just me and my mum, when we used to live together. What we had changed each week too as we looked for something different to try. So it wasn’t always the same each week.

And since I have lived on my own, my meals are different everytime and not always regular meals.
The only time it may have been same or simlar was Christmas and Boxing Day. Christmas being chicken roast dinner and Boxing Day a fish dinner. Now it’s just been me since 2019 on those days and although I have had chicken on some Christmas’s. Each year it is not guaranteed as I go with what I fancy or where my mood takes me.

    1. Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It’s interesting to hear how your family meals evolved over time, especially as your living situation changed. It’s a great reminder that food, much like life, can be spontaneous and shaped by our moods and preferences. I love the idea of going with what feels right each year, especially during the holidays. It sounds like you’ve created your own unique traditions that reflect your personal tastes, which is so special. Food truly is a reflection of where we are in life, and it’s wonderful how it continues to bring comfort and joy, no matter the circumstances.
