My Unexpected Challenge with the Notes App and the Lessons Learned
In the early hours, inspired by the daily prompt, I was eager to start writing a blog post titled “Reimagining History: A Journey Beyond Time.” However, my creative flow was quickly interrupted by an unexpected technical glitch in my Notes app on my iPhone 14 Pro Max, running iOS 18.1. I was having trouble adding clickable links to the note, a feature I rely on for organizing sources and references.
Determined to troubleshoot, I went through the following steps to resolve the issue:
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
- Copying the Link: I started with the basics, ensuring that I was correctly copying the link by tapping and holding the link until options appeared, then selecting “Copy.”
- Pasting the Link: I launched the Notes app, opened a new note, and tapped where I wanted to paste the link. But after pasting, the link wasn’t clickable.
- Ensuring Link Format: I double-checked that the link began with “http://” or “https://” to ensure it would be clickable. I even tried typing the full URL manually, but still, it didn’t work.
- Using Hyperlinks with Text: I thought about creating a hyperlink by typing out the text, selecting it, and tapping the “Aa” icon to check for any hyperlinking options. But again, I found no success.
- Restarting the App: Frustrated, I decided to force close the Notes app by swiping up from the bottom of the screen to bring up the app switcher. After reopening, the issue persisted.
- Restarting the Device: Thinking this could be a system glitch, I restarted my iPhone, hoping to refresh any temporary bugs that might be affecting the app.
- Checking for Updates: As a last step, I went to Settings > General > Software Update to make sure my device was fully updated. But even with the latest iOS update, the Notes app still wouldn’t cooperate.
A New Solution: Switching to Pages

Realizing that time was slipping away, I decided to switch to the Pages app, hoping it could provide the reliability I needed. I transferred my work, formatted the content, and successfully published my blog post on the daily prompt using Pages.
The Ironic Twist: Notes Starts Working
After finishing my work, I returned to the Notes app one last time to see if it would work. Surprisingly, the app now accepted links as clickable! The issue had somehow resolved itself, a realization that came with a sense of both relief and irony.
Reflecting on the Experience
This unexpected detour taught me a few lessons, both technical and personal:
- Persistence Pays Off: Trying multiple methods of troubleshooting helped me learn more about the app’s features, even if they didn’t work immediately.
- Flexibility is Key: Switching to a different tool (Pages) ensured that my writing process wasn’t disrupted.
- Patience with Technology: Sometimes, technology has a way of self-correcting, and I realized the importance of keeping calm through the glitches.
Takeaway
While I didn’t expect a simple link issue to lead to such an adventure, it’s moments like these that remind me to embrace both the unexpected and the mundane as part of the creative journey. Despite the challenges, I completed my blog post, and I emerged with a renewed appreciation for resilience and flexibility.
In the end, this technical hiccup transformed into a valuable experience, adding a small but meaningful chapter to my journey as a writer.
