It carries a story—a connection to history, faith, and family. I’m Johnbritto Kurusumuthu, and today, I want to share what my name means to me and how it’s shaped my life.

The name “Johnbritto” comes from Saint John de Britto, a Jesuit missionary known for his unwavering faith and courage. He lived in 17th-century India, dedicating his life to spreading love and hope. My family chose this name to honor his legacy, which they saw as a reflection of values they wanted me to carry: resilience, faith, and compassion.

My last name, “Kurusumuthu,” translates to “Pearl of the Cross.” It’s a poetic way of describing the beauty that emerges through struggle. For me, this isn’t just a surname—it’s a reminder of my family’s journey, their sacrifices, and their faith that’s been passed down through generations.

Saint John de Britto’s story is one of courage and commitment. He was a Portuguese missionary who adapted to the Tamil culture, lived among the people, and shared his faith despite great personal risk. He was eventually martyred for his beliefs. Knowing this, I often think about what it means to stand firm in your values and dedicate yourself to something bigger than yourself.

When my parents named me Johnbritto, they were giving me more than a name—they were connecting me to this incredible example of strength and purpose.

    My first name, Elizabeth, my mum chose after the Queen.

    And my middle name is Ann, which is carried down through the family on my mum’s side. But with me not having children, it stops with me, otherwise if I had a girl, I would have carried it forward.
