Kanyakumari Matti Banana Receives GI Tag

On July 31, 2023, the Kanyakumari Matti Banana, a unique variety of banana (Musa sapidisiaca) grown exclusively in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, India, was granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Registrar of Geographical Indications, valid until April 28, 2030. This prestigious recognition highlights the distinct qualities of the Matti Banana and ensures that only bananas produced in Kanyakumari can carry this authentic label, protecting it from imitation and boosting its market identity.

The GI tag application was filed on April 29, 2021, by the Kanyakumari Banana and Horticulture Farmers Producer Company Limited, based in Veeyanoor. This achievement is a milestone for local farmers, as it promotes the Matti Banana to a wider audience and supports the economic growth of the Kanyakumari district.

Unique Features of Kanyakumari Matti Banana

The Matti Banana, a diploid cultivar, is celebrated for its distinctive characteristics that set it apart from other banana varieties:

Appearance: The fruit has a unique “crocodile finger” shape due to its 2.5–3 cm long apex and a wind-blown bunch structure.

Flavor and Texture: It offers a sweet, honey-like taste with a slightly acidic undertone, low sugar content (8.7 TSS), and a firm, powdery texture.

Medicinal Value: The corm extract is traditionally used to treat jaundice, and the fruit is suitable for infants due to its low sugar content.

Cultivation Area: Grown primarily in the Agatheeswaram, Thovalai, and Thiruvattar taluks of Kanyakumari, benefiting from the region’s unique climate and soil.

The Matti Banana is a seasonal fruit, with its availability supported by Kanyakumari’s favorable climate, making it a staple in local markets and increasingly sought after for export.

Impact of the GI Tag

The GI tag for the Kanyakumari Matti Banana is a significant step toward preserving its cultural and agricultural heritage.
