What are your favorite websites?
My favourite websites are those that enrich my life and inspire growth. At the heart of them all is Rise&Inspire, my platform, where I share positivity and connect with like-minded individuals. Other favourites include LinkedIn for professional insights, TED for endless inspiration, and Coursera for continuous learning. Each of these sites fuels my creativity, knowledge, and purpose in unique ways.
Exploring the Digital Universe: Beyond My Favorite Websites
Introduction
Have you ever noticed how the same questions can sometimes invite us to think in entirely new ways? Today’s WordPress prompt—”What are your favourite websites?”—brings me back to a post I wrote almost exactly a year ago. In that post, I proudly shared my journey as the owner of Rise&Inspire, my beloved website and digital business. I spoke about the joy and freedom it gives me to connect with readers on my terms, without algorithms standing in the way of genuine interaction.
Now, faced with this question again, I feel a different sort of inspiration. Rather than revisiting familiar territory, I want to dive into what it means to have a “favourite website.” Beyond popularity or global reach, what are those sites that enrich my life, challenge my thinking, or offer a safe place for reflection? I want to go beyond “favourites” in the usual sense and explore the hidden, transformative role websites can play in our lives.
1. Revisiting My Journey: A Reflection on Rise&Inspire
I began this journey with Rise&Inspire because I wanted a platform that was fully mine—a digital space where my ideas and my creative voice would be respected and valued. Owning a website feels like owning a little piece of the vast internet, like running a shop that opens its doors each day to the world. Here, I am free to express myself without restrictions, to interact with readers genuinely, and to explore my interests without any interference.
For me, Rise&Inspire isn’t just a website; it’s my “sonthathozil,” my own business. The Tamil saying—Are you doing sonthathozil or admaithozil?—carries weight in my culture, where running your own establishment is a mark of pride and self-reliance. On this blog, I shared that story last year, reflecting on how my website fulfils a long-held dream and gives me control over my creative expression. This year, I want to explore how other websites, too, have shaped my life, often in ways that might surprise me.
2. Defining a “Favorite Website”: Expanding the Concept
As I reflected on this prompt, I realized I had never really questioned what makes a website my “favourite.” Does it need to be one I visit frequently, like the search engines we rely on daily? Or maybe it’s the platforms where I connect with family and friends, like social media?
But what about the less obvious choices—websites that don’t always top the popularity charts but resonate deeply with who I am? To me, a favourite website might be any digital space that feeds my mind, stirs my creativity, or brings moments of quiet reflection. It could be a place I only visit occasionally, but each visit leaves me feeling uplifted, curious, or challenged. So today, I’m redefining what makes a site my “favourite.” It’s not just about convenience or habit but about how a website enriches my life in unexpected ways.
3. Digital Spaces for Inspiration and Personal Growth
There are certain sites I turn to when I’m looking for something beyond the usual information or entertainment. These aren’t the places most people list as “favourite” websites, but they offer me exactly what I need to grow, explore, and discover.
TED Talks is one of them. Whenever I need fresh ideas or a different perspective, I dive into a TED Talk. It’s like sitting down with some of the world’s brightest minds, right from my home. Then there’s Medium, where I find myself pulled into a world of diverse voices and stories that sometimes feel like personal letters to my soul. Each story and each article feels like a window into someone else’s world and perspective, and often I leave with new thoughts lingering in my mind.
And then there’s Khan Academy. Every so often, I indulge my curiosity by learning something new. Sometimes it’s for practical reasons; other times, it’s just the joy of learning. This is a site that helps me reconnect with the students within me, reminding me that no matter how old I get, there’s always room to learn.
4. Websites such as Virtual Communities and Safe Havens
I’ve come to appreciate websites that don’t simply inform but create a sense of belonging. I think of Stack Overflow for developers, where I’ve found answers to tech questions I never knew I had. It’s a place where everyone helps everyone, and even though I’m not a tech expert, I love witnessing that generosity.
Another sanctuary for me is Goodreads. It’s a place where I connect with fellow readers who share my love for books. There’s a comfort in being part of this community, swapping recommendations and exploring new titles. It’s a space that feels personal and safe, like a cosy library where everyone knows your favourite genres.
Then, of course, there’s my own Rise&Inspire. It’s where I interact with people who resonate with my writing, share my values, and support my journey. Here, I am more than a content creator; I’m a part of a community.
5. Innovative Platforms That Challenge My Thinking
When I need a mental workout, I often turn to interactive and thought-provoking sites that push me to think differently. Lumosity and Sporcle are two of my go-to platforms for this. Lumosity, with its brain games, keeps me mentally sharp, while Sporcle’s endless quizzes test my general knowledge in the most entertaining ways.
For broader perspectives, I visit Al Jazeera English and National Geographic. These sites take me beyond my daily bubble, offering insights into world events and stunning visual storytelling that expands my view of the world. They remind me of the vastness and diversity of life and help me stay connected to issues beyond my immediate surroundings.
6. Shifting the Perspective: Websites as Life-Changing Tools
Beyond the sites I enjoy, some empower me to make real changes in the world. Change.org and Avaaz are platforms where I can support the causes I believe in. They offer a way to contribute to the collective good, and each time I sign a petition or join a movement, I feel part of a larger purpose.
Environmental awareness has always been important to me, so NASA’s Climate Change website and Project Drawdown are sources of information and action. They remind me that every small step I take toward sustainability matters. Similarly, Mint has become an invaluable tool for managing my finances, helping me stay mindful of my goals and responsibilities.
7. Concluding Thoughts: Rethinking Our Relationship with Websites
Reflecting on this prompt has taught me that our favourite websites are not always those we use the most or talk about the most. Sometimes, they’re quiet companions, helping us learn, connect, reflect, or act. They’re spaces where we grow, encounter new ideas, and feel part of something bigger than ourselves.

For me, my favourites are those that bring depth and richness to my digital life. I see Rise&Inspire as my creation—a platform I’m proud to share with you, my readers, and a space where I hope you feel inspired. And beyond it, I hope that you, too, have spaces that feel like digital havens, where your mind and spirit can thrive.
