Which Nearby Beaches and Hills Bring You Peace?

What is your favorite place to go in your city?

My favourite place near my city is Poovar, a serene coastal village where the Neyyar River meets the Arabian Sea, offering tranquillity and natural beauty. However, I also cherish the vibrant beaches of Kovalam, the misty hills of Ponmudi, and the spiritual allure of Kanyakumari—each unique and enriching in its own way. These places are not destinations but experiences that bring peace, inspiration, and joy.

Beyond Poovar: Exploring My Favorite Places Near My City

Introduction

When I saw today’s WordPress prompt, “My Favorite Place in My City,” A smile instantly crept across my face. It’s the same prompt I wrote about exactly a year ago, on November 20, 2023. Back then, I chose to write about Poovar, a serene coastal village near my town in southern India.

Poovar remains close to my heart, with its estuaries, tranquil beach, and the green embrace of nature. But when I realized the prompt was repeated, I asked myself: Should I simply write about Poovar again? Or should I expand my horizons to include the many other places near my city that bring me joy?

Today, I’ve decided to go beyond Poovar and take you on a journey to a few more of my favourite places, each with its unique charm and stories.

Why Poovar Will Always Be Special

Poovar has always been my go-to escape. The peaceful blend of the Neyyar River meeting the Arabian Sea, the golden sands, and the swaying coconut trees make it feel like a slice of paradise.

I remember one specific visit, early one misty morning. The boat ride through the estuaries felt like stepping into another world. The stillness of the water mirrored my thoughts, and I felt a deep connection to the moment. For me, Poovar isn’t simply a place—it’s an experience of stillness and serenity, far removed from the noise of everyday life.

Expanding Horizons – Nearby Favorites

Kovalam beach

1. Kovalam: The Vibrant Coastal Beauty
Kovalam, unlike Poovar’s quiet charm, is alive with energy. Its crescent-shaped beaches are perfect for a morning walk or simply sitting and watching the waves crash against the shore.

One particular memory that stands out is a sunset I witnessed here. The sky turned shades of orange and pink, and as the sun dipped into the horizon, a calm washed over me. Kovalam has this magical way of reminding me that even amidst the crowd, peace can be found in nature’s grandeur.

2. Ponmudi: A Misty Retreat in the Hills
If Poovar and Kovalam are about the ocean, Ponmudi is where I go to embrace the hills. This quaint hill station, with its winding roads and mist-covered peaks, offers a refreshing change of pace.

On my last visit, I remember hiking a trail surrounded by lush greenery. The cool breeze and the chirping of birds felt like nature’s own symphony. It was one of those rare moments when time seemed to stand still, and all that mattered was the sheer beauty of the present.

3. Kanyakumari: Where the Seas Meet
Kanyakumari holds a unique place in my heart. It’s the southernmost tip of India, where the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, and the Indian Ocean converge.

Standing there, watching the sunrise, is a humbling experience. The Vivekananda Rock Memorial, surrounded by the vast ocean, has an energy that leaves me feeling inspired and renewed every time I visit. It’s not the view but the sense of being part of something much greater than oneself.

The Essence of a Favorite Place

What makes a place your favourite? For me, it’s not about the beauty or the amenities. It’s about the peace it brings, the memories it holds, and the way it makes me feel alive.

Poovar, Kovalam, Ponmudi, and Kanyakumari are not mere destinations—they’re companions in my journey of life. They’ve offered me solace, inspiration, and moments of reflection.

The Gift of Proximity

Living in a region so rich in natural and cultural diversity is a blessing. Within a few hours, I can transition from the golden beaches of Poovar and Kovalam to the misty peaks of Ponmudi or the spiritual energy of Kanyakumari.

It’s a privilege to have such treasures nearby, each offering a unique experience, each reminding me of the beauty of the world we often take for granted.

Conclusion: Revisiting and Redefining Favorites

While Poovar will always be special, writing this blog has reminded me of how many other places hold a piece of my heart. Each visit to Kovalam, Ponmudi, or Kanyakumari enriches my life in its way.

So, today, I’m grateful not only for Poovar but for the entire tapestry of experiences that these places near my city provide.

Skegness I used to class as my second home. An area I seen from when I was a kid. I enjoyed being near ot on the beach.

But when I went to Brighton, (in the UK also) I absolutely loved and have been back three times. I started calling that my second home from day one.
I loved being by the beach. Although I wish it had sand rather than pebbles. But you can’t have everything. 😁
Although I have seen a couple of other places in Brighton. On my last holiday there, I turned down going on the excursions, just so I could see more of Brighton.

It’s been a number of years since last being here. But I will be taking a holiday here in hopefully by two years time, as this is where I will go back to, to fulfil my last wish for my mum.

Another place I love in the UK where I have only been once. But I would love to go back to is Torquay.
It’s true what they say about the place “like the Mediterranean.” I was absolutely in awe of how blue the sea was. I spent a lot of time along or on the beach.

    1. Thank you for sharing such heartfelt memories! It’s wonderful how places like Brighton and Torquay have left such a lasting impression on you. The connection to the beach and the special memories with your mum make them even more meaningful. I hope your future visit to Brighton brings you peace and fulfilment, and that you get to revisit the stunning beauty of Torquay soon!
