Why Do Cartoons Stay With Us Long After Childhood?

What’s your favorite cartoon?

My favourite cartoon is hard to pinpoint because each one I’ve loved has taught me something unique. From the slapstick humour of Tom & Jerry to the introspective depth of BoJack Horseman, cartoons have always been more than just entertainment for me—they’re teachers, offering valuable life lessons along the way.

Cartoons Beyond Laughter: A Journey Through Life’s Lessons

When I opened WordPress today and saw the prompt, “What’s your favorite cartoon?”, This wasn’t simply any prompt; it was a question I had answered exactly a year ago. Back then, I poured my heart into a blog post titled, “D’oh! My Enduring Love for The Simpsons.” But today, I want to approach this question differently.

Cartoons have always been more than mere entertainment to me. They’ve been teachers, mirrors, and, at times, even therapists. So, instead of spotlighting just one, let me take you on a journey—my journey through the world of cartoons and the life lessons they’ve taught me.

Cartoons as Mirrors of Society

When I think about cartoons, one thing becomes clear: they’re not for laughs alone. They hold up a mirror to society, reflecting its quirks, flaws, and triumphs. Take The Simpsons, for instance. Sure, it’s funny and satirical, but it also explores deep into human relationships, community dynamics, and even politics.

But The Simpsons isn’t alone in this. Cartoons like Avatar: The Last Airbender explore themes of resilience, balance, and harmony, while DuckTales reminds us of the importance of family and adventure. Through their colourful characters and exaggerated scenarios, these shows manage to say things that live-action often cannot.

My Evolving Favorites

If you’d asked me what my favourite cartoon was as a child, my answer would have been different. Back then, it was Tom & Jerry. The slapstick humour, the endless chase, and the hilarity of their antics were the highlights of my afternoons.

In my teenage years, Scooby-Doo took centre stage. There was something magical about watching Mystery Inc. solve puzzles with teamwork and courage. It taught me that no problem is too big when you have friends by your side.

Adulthood, however, brought a shift. My tastes matured, and I found myself drawn to the introspective brilliance of BoJack Horseman. This wasn’t merely a cartoon; it was a raw and honest exploration of mental health, fame, and personal growth. I still remember moments from that show that left me in tears and made me question my perspectives on life.

Lessons from Cartoons

Cartoons have a way of sneaking profound lessons into their stories, often disguised as humour or fantasy. Let me share a few of my favourite lessons:

  1. Bravery in Adversity (Courage the Cowardly Dog): This quirky little show taught me that courage isn’t the absence of fear; it’s acting despite it.
  2. Creativity and Optimism (Phineas and Ferb): These two boys showed me that with imagination, every day can be an adventure.
  3. Human Flaws and Family Bonds (The Simpsons): This family’s imperfections reminded me that love and laughter can coexist with chaos.

Cartoons as Timeless Companions

As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to realize that cartoons are timeless companions. They’re not just for kids; they’re for anyone willing to see the world through a playful, imaginative lens. Shows like Rick and Morty and Adventure Time have proven that cartoons can tackle complex themes while still being wildly entertaining.

Even now, on days when life feels difficult, I find solace in revisiting old favourites. They bring back me to simpler times and, surprisingly, offer new perspectives with each viewing.

A Personal Anecdote

There’s one moment that stands out vividly in my memory. It was during a particularly tough phase in my life when I stumbled upon Avatar: The Last Airbender. Watching Aang’s journey to bring balance to the world felt oddly comforting. I found myself drawing parallels to my struggles and learning to face them with a sense of calm and purpose.

One specific scene, where Uncle Iroh advises Zuko to embrace his true self, struck a chord with me. “Sometimes, life is like this dark tunnel,” he says. “You can’t always see the light at the end of the tunnel, but if you just keep moving, you will come to a better place.” Those words stayed with me and continue to guide me to this day.

Conclusion: The Everlasting Charm of Cartoons

So, what’s my favourite cartoon? A year ago, my answer was The Simpsons. Today, I realize that question doesn’t have a definitive answer. Each cartoon I’ve loved holds a special place in my heart, not for the laughter it brought but for the lessons it taught.

Cartoons are more than just stories on a screen; they’re companions, teachers, and a source of endless joy. And as I write this, I can’t help but wonder: What lessons will the next cartoon teach me?

It’s been a while since revisiting cartoons again, but Tom and Jerry come to mind.

I was very late getting into The Simpsons and I enjoyed it better than I imagined.

There are other cartoons that I can’t remember off the top of my head right now. But yes, cartoons can’t be narrowed down to just one.
