Are You Ready to Find Joy in Life’s Surprises?

Is your life today what you pictured a year ago?

A year ago, I had a vision for my life, but looking back, the most meaningful moments came from the unexpected. Life rarely follows our mental blueprints, and I’ve learned to embrace its surprises, finding beauty and growth in the unplanned.

1. Introduction: The Repeated Question, A Fresh Perspective

Exactly one year ago, I sat down to reflect on the same question: “Is your life today what you pictured a year ago?” My response then was one of gratitude and fulfillment, as I celebrated the realization of a dream—owning a blog and becoming a happy blogger. Fast forward to today, WordPress presents me with the same prompt, and I find myself amused by the coincidence.

But this year, I want to approach it differently. Instead of revisiting goals achieved or missed, I want to explore the idea of picturing life itself—not as a rigid plan but as a dynamic, ever-changing journey. If life has taught me anything, it’s that the unexpected often holds the greatest treasures.

2. The Fragility of Mental Blueprints

A year ago, I had a clear picture of what I wanted my life to look like. But I’ve come to realize that no mental picture is ever complete or accurate. Life, as I’ve experienced it, rarely adheres to the blueprint I create in my mind.

It’s like planning a road trip with a detailed map only to discover that the most memorable moments happen when you stray from the planned route. The detours, the wrong turns, and the unplanned stops often lead to the most breathtaking views.

Looking back, some of the most meaningful experiences of the past year weren’t even on my radar when I set my goals. It’s humbling to realize that my vision was just a small corner of the vast canvas that life was waiting to paint.

3. Life’s Yearly Evolution – A Reflective Framework

When I reflect on the past year, I’ve stopped asking, “Did I achieve what I set out to do?” Instead, I ask:

➤How have I grown emotionally?

➤What new relationships have enriched my life?

➤What challenges shaped my resilience?

This shift in perspective has been liberating. Instead of measuring life by accomplishments, I now see it as a journey of growth across multiple dimensions. For instance, one of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is patience—not just with others, but with myself.

So, I ask you: What have you gained this year that you didn’t even know you needed?

4. Picturing the Future as an Artist, Not an Architect

I used to picture the future with the precision of an architect—meticulously planning every detail. But life has taught me that it’s far more fulfilling to approach it as an artist, painting as I go.

Being an artist means embracing spontaneity, welcoming surprises, and seeing the beauty in the unexpected. It’s about creating something vibrant and unique, even when the strokes don’t go as planned.

For example, I imagined Rise & Inspire as a structured platform for sharing my ideas, but it has grown into something much more—a space for connection, inspiration, and mutual growth. This wasn’t part of the original plan, but it’s better than anything I could have envisioned.

5. The Role of Serendipity and Flexibility

This year has been a masterclass in serendipity. I’ve stumbled upon opportunities I never sought and found joy in situations I once feared.

One memory stands out: a project I initially resisted turned out to be a source of immense growth and fulfillment. It reminded me that flexibility is not a sign of weakness but a superpower. It allows us to adapt, grow, and thrive in ways we never imagined.

Sometimes, the picture we didn’t plan for becomes the masterpiece we treasure most.

6. Tools to Reframe the Future

As I reflect, I’ve developed a few practices that help me embrace life’s uncertainty:

  1. Set Intentions, Not Rigid Goals: Instead of saying, “I must achieve this,” I now say, “I aim to grow in this area.”
  2. Practice Gratitude for the Unexpected: I’ve learned to appreciate even the challenges, as they often lead to unexpected blessings.
  3. Write Letters to Your Future Self: This has been a transformative practice for me. Writing to the “me” of next year helps me focus on growth rather than perfection.

7. A Letter to My Future Self🦅

Dear Future Me,

As I write this, I have no idea what the coming year will hold. I have hopes, dreams, and aspirations, but I know better than to cling too tightly to them. Instead, I promise to embrace each moment as it comes, to find joy in the unexpected, and to trust the journey.

Whatever challenges or surprises come your way, remember this: Life’s twists and turns are not obstacles; they are opportunities to grow, learn, and create something beautiful.

With love and curiosity,
Your Past Self

8. Conclusion: Celebrating Life’s Dynamic Canvas

As I reflect on the question, “Is your life today what you pictured a year ago?” I realize that the answer doesn’t matter as much as the journey itself. Life isn’t about achieving a perfect picture; it’s about embracing the ever-changing masterpiece that unfolds before us.

The beauty of life lies in its unpredictability, its capacity to surprise and transform us in ways we never imagined. So, here’s to another year of growth, surprises, and creating something beautiful—one brushstroke at a time.

She depicted life as it is, we walk with it, and we thought that it was she who walked with us. We only need patience. Yes, we have learned patience and contentment with what is given. I hope for the beginning of many years in which you will find what you wished for.
