What’s your go-to comfort food?
My go-to comfort food is a humble bowl of kanji—rice porridge—because it reconnects me with my roots, brings emotional clarity, and offers warmth in life’s quietest moments.
What’s Your Go-To Comfort Food?
Discovering the Taste of Solace and the Flavour of Memory

When the world feels heavy, when the sky darkens within, or when silence says more than words—what do you reach for? Not for answers. Just for comfort. And comfort doesn’t shout. It arrives quietly, often in the form of food.
To me, comfort food is soul food—not for its richness, but for how it brings me back to myself.
The Dish That Remembers Me
My comfort food isn’t extravagant. It’s a simple bowl of kanji—rice porridge, warm and modest. But in its steam, I find memory, care, and calm.
In my childhood home, kanji was the language of healing when I was unwell, the sign of quiet when life grew loud, the bowl waiting after exams, grief, or long journeys. It reminded me that peace can be served one spoon at a time.
Why Comfort Food Comforts
Comfort food doesn’t need explaining. It speaks through scent, texture, and memory. It holds time—mother’s touch, father’s words, grandmother’s kitchen, a rainy day, a still night.
Kanji nourishes more than hunger. It quiets the mind, steadies the heart, and reminds me that wholeness comes not from excess, but from connection.
When Food Becomes a Metaphor
Every comfort food tells a story. For some, it’s biryani—layered, festive. For others, toast and butter—familiar, grounding. For me, kanji is clarity. It clears the noise and brings me back to what matters: warmth, humility, peace.
Comfort food isn’t a craving—it’s a memory, a moment, a message from the self.

Final Thought
The next time someone asks, “What’s your go-to comfort food?”—don’t just say the name. Say what it means. Say when you needed it most.
Because in that bowl, that bite—you’ll find not just flavour, but truth.
