Are You Wearing a Borrowed Identity Without Knowing It?

Every mirror shows a face. Not every mirror tells the truth about who you are.

Look in the mirror this morning. What name did you see written there?

MEANING 

This verse describes the final destiny of the redeemed: unhindered worship, unveiled sight of God, and a name that marks eternal belonging. The forehead — the most visible, unconcealed part of the body — becomes the place where identity is declared for all eternity. To bear His name is to be fully, permanently His.

CONTEXT 

These words close the Book of Revelation, part of John’s vision on the island of Patmos, written to persecuted first-century churches under Roman rule. The image of a name on the forehead directly answers the earlier image of the “mark of the beast” in Revelation 13 — two opposing seals, two opposing loyalties, offered to every believer facing pressure to conform. 

THE NAME YOU CARRY NOW

Every day, the world tries to write something on your forehead. Anxiety writes “not enough.” Comparison writes “behind.” Shame writes “disqualified.” These names are borrowed, not given — pressed onto you by circumstance, not by your Creator. Revelation 22 dares to ask a bold question: whose handwriting is actually on your life today?

THE NAME YOU WERE MADE FOR

Before the world named you anything, God had already spoken your true name over you. Isaiah 43:1 declares it plainly — you are called, you are His. The name on the forehead in Revelation is not a reward earned at the finish line; it is the full unveiling of an identity that was already sealed the moment you belonged to Him. Eternity does not invent who you are — it reveals it.

THE MIRROR OF GLORY

Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 3:18 that we, with unveiled faces, reflect the Lord’s glory and are being transformed into His image, from glory to glory. This is the mirror principle of the Christian life: we become what we behold. Revelation 22 shows us the final mirror — face to face, no veil, no distortion, no more borrowed names. Every day you gaze upon Him now is training for that unveiled morning.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

I have often caught myself checking the wrong mirror — the mirror of achievement, of others’ opinions, of yesterday’s failures. But this verse stops me every time. It insists that the truest reflection of who I am has already been settled in heaven, sealed with His name, not mine to negotiate. That is not passive comfort. It is bold ground to stand on.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

Before you open your phone, your inbox, or your to-do list today, pause and ask: what name am I allowing to be written on me this morning? Deliberately replace one borrowed name — “behind,” “not enough,” “invisible” — with the name He has already spoken over you: chosen, sealed, His.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION

What name has the world tried to press onto your forehead this week? Where in your life do you most need to trust the name God has already spoken over you?

PRAYER

Lord, erase every borrowed name pressed upon me by fear, shame, or comparison. Seal me instead with Your name — not as distant hope, but as present identity. Let me carry it boldly today, until I see Your face and know fully what I have always been: Yours. Amen.

You do not have to wait for eternity to start living as one who is named and known. Walk today already wearing the name He gave you.

Eternity will not give you a new name — it will simply remove every veil hiding the one He already wrote.
