MEANING
This verse declares two unshakable truths about God: His steadfast love (Hebrew: chesed) is mighty and prevails over us like a protecting power, and His faithfulness (Hebrew: emet) never expires — it endures forever. Because these two realities are certain, the only fitting response of the human heart is praise. The verse teaches that worship is not rooted in our changing circumstances but in God’s unchanging character.
CONTEXT
Psalm 117 is the shortest chapter in the entire Bible — only two verses — yet it is a missionary psalm addressed to all nations and all peoples, not to Israel alone. It belongs to the “Hallel” psalms (Psalms 113–118), sung by the Jewish people at Passover, and very likely sung by Jesus Himself with His disciples on the night before His crucifixion (Matthew 26:30). Saint Paul quotes this psalm in Romans 15:11 to prove that God’s mercy was always intended for the Gentiles — for the whole world.
If you were asked to hold up the weight of the entire universe, how many pillars would you need? Ten thousand? A million? The psalmist answers with holy audacity: two. Just two. Notice the psalmist’s exact words: “great is his steadfast love toward us.” The Malayalam rendering captures something magnificent: “അവിടുത്തെ കാരുണ്യം ശക്തമാണ്” — His mercy is strong, mighty, powerful. This is not a fragile affection that weakens when we fail. This is a love with muscle. The original Hebrew literally means His love has “prevailed over us” — like a flood that overwhelms, like a conqueror who wins.
Think of what this means for you today. Your sins did not exhaust His love. Your doubts did not dilute it. Your wandering did not weary it. His love toward you is not a thin thread — it is a mighty pillar, and it is load-bearing. It can carry the full weight of your past, your present anxieties, and your uncertain tomorrow.
Pillar Two: Faithfulness — The Truth That Outlasts Time
The second pillar is emet — faithfulness, truth, reliability. And attached to it is the most staggering word in the verse: forever. “The faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.”
Everything around us carries an expiry date. Empires fall. Health declines. Even the strongest human promises bend under pressure. But the psalmist plants this pillar deep into eternity itself: God’s faithfulness does not merely last a long time — it endures forever. He who kept His word to Abraham, to Moses, to David, and supremely in Jesus Christ, is keeping His word to you this very morning. God has never broken a promise, and He is not going to begin with yours.
The Keystone: Praise the Lord!
Two pillars, and between them one keystone: “Praise the Lord!” — Hallelujah! Notice that the psalm does not say “Praise the Lord when you feel like it” or “Praise the Lord when circumstances improve.” Praise here is not a mood; it is a conclusion. When you truly see the two pillars — love that prevails and faithfulness that never expires — praise is simply the sound a convinced heart makes.

Here is the secret hidden in the shortest psalm: your stability does not come from the size of your faith but from the strength of His pillars. Weak believers standing on strong pillars are safer than strong believers standing on weak ground. The nations are invited into this psalm because these pillars were never built for one people alone — they hold up every life that shelters beneath them.

Ask yourself honestly this morning: which pillar have I been doubting? Have I been living as though God’s love were fragile — as though one more failure would break it? Or have I been living as though His faithfulness had a deadline — as though He answered prayers in the past but may not in my future? Name the doubt. Then lean your full weight, deliberately, on the pillar you have been avoiding.
Practical Application
Today, do one thing between the two pillars. When anxiety rises about a task, a meeting, a relationship, or a health concern, pause and say aloud: “His love is mighty toward me; His faithfulness endures forever.” Then act — write the letter, make the call, face the day — as a person standing on ground that cannot shift. Let praise be the first word of your morning and the last word of your night.
