Are there any activities or hobbies you’ve outgrown or lost interest in over time?
Yes, I outgrew competitive gaming. It used to be a huge passion, but eventually, it stopped bringing me joy and started feeling like a burden.
The Algorithm of Joy: When Your Passion Needs a Reboot
“Rise & Inspire” family, let’s talk about algorithms. Not the kind that control social media (although those definitely factor into our lives!), but the internal algorithm that governs our passions. You know, the one that says: “This activity + time invested = Joy.”

But what happens when that equation breaks down? What happens when the activities we once loved start returning a “NULL” value? Today’s prompt – “Are there any activities or hobbies you’ve outgrown or lost interest in over time?” – sparked a thought about this very topic.
My confessed “bug” in the system? Competitive gaming.
Hear me out. For years, I was obsessed. Leaderboards, strategies, team dynamics – I lived and breathed it. Late nights were spent honing my skills, climbing the ranks, and chasing that fleeting feeling of victory. It wasn’t just a hobby; it was a lifestyle. I built friendships, learned valuable teamwork skills, and even felt a sense of accomplishment that bled into other areas of my life. It was a core component of my algorithm of joy.
But then, something shifted. The wins felt less rewarding, the losses more crushing. The time commitment started to feel less like a passion and more like a burden. The positive energy it once generated slowly morphed into frustration and anxiety. The algorithm was glitching.
I initially tried to force a fix. New strategies, different games, even a new gaming rig. But the underlying problem remained: the joy was gone. The “time invested” variable was still high, but the “joy” output was consistently zero.
That’s when I had to face the truth: my passion had run its course. The algorithm needed a reboot.
Letting go of competitive gaming was harder than I expected. It felt like admitting defeat, like abandoning a part of my identity. But ultimately, it was a necessary step in my own “strive to elevate.”
So, how do you know when your own passion algorithm needs a reboot? Here are a few signs:
💢The Fun Factor is Gone: This is the most obvious. If you dread the activity more than you enjoy it, something’s wrong.
💢It Feels Like Work, Not Play: Passions should energize you, not drain you. If it feels like a chore, it’s time to re-evaluate.
💢It’s Impacting Other Areas of Your Life Negatively: Are you sacrificing sleep, relationships, or your physical/mental health for this hobby? If so, it’s time to scale back or let go.
💢You’re Just Going Through the Motions: Are you participating out of habit or obligation, rather than genuine enthusiasm?
The Power of the Reboot:
Rebooting your passion algorithm isn’t about giving up on joy; it’s about finding new sources of it. It’s about allowing yourself to evolve, to explore new interests, and to optimize your life for maximum happiness.
Since leaving competitive gaming, I’ve rediscovered my love for writing (hence this blog!), started learning a new language, and even taken up pottery. These new activities not only bring me joy but also complement my “Rise & Inspire” mission by fostering creativity, expanding my horizons, and promoting mindfulness.
Remember, your internal algorithm is a dynamic system. It’s constantly adapting to your changing needs and experiences. Don’t be afraid to debug it, update it, or even rewrite it entirely.
