Who Fuels Your Ascent?

Who are your favorite people to be around?

My favorite people to be around are those who elevate me—mentors who keep me grounded, visionaries who expand my dreams, catalysts who ignite action, navigators who help me course-correct, and fellow travelers who share the journey with me.

The Hot Air Balloon Theory of Relationships:

As the sun rises over the horizon, casting golden light on the world below, I often think of life as a hot air balloon journey. To soar, you need more than a basket and a flame—you need an invisible crew. These are the people who anchor you, ignite your fire, chart your course, and remind you why the sky matters. At Rise&Inspire, where our mission is to strive to elevate in life, today’s prompt—“Who are your favorite people to be around?”—isn’t about listing traits. It’s about recognizing the unsung heroes who turn ordinary moments into lift-off.

Let’s unravel the anatomy of elevation.

The Ballast: Those Who Keep You Grounded

Every balloon needs ballast—weight that stabilizes it during turbulence. These are the people who ask, “What’s your why?” when you’re chasing a how. They’re mentors, grandparents, or old friends who’ve seen you at your worst and still hand you a mirror to confront your truth.

I once met a woman in her 70s who’d survived cancer twice. When I complained about a missed opportunity, she smiled and said, “The ground teaches more than the sky ever will.” Ballast people don’t clip your wings; they teach you to respect gravity so your flight isn’t reckless.

The Burner: The Sparks That Ignite Motion

The burner is the engine of a hot air balloon. Similarly, some people radiate catalytic energy. They’re the colleagues who cheer, “Let’s try it!” when others say, “It’s impossible,” or the stranger at a café who shares a story that realigns your purpose.

Science backs this: A Harvard study found that positive social interactions release oxytocin, which enhances creativity and resilience. Burner people aren’t just optimistic—they’re alchemists who turn doubt into fuel.

The Navigators: Guides Who Help You Read the Wind

Navigators are the quiet strategists—the friend who maps a detour when your path floods or the therapist who helps you decode emotional weather patterns. They don’t fly the balloon for you; they hand you the compass.

In Japanese culture, this role is called a sensei—someone who’s walked the path before you. As author Elizabeth Gilbert writes, “You need someone who sees your potential even when you’re a mess.” Navigators see storms as lessons, not obstacles.

The Fellow Travelers: Companions Sharing the Ride

These are your peers—the writers in your workshop, the gym buddy who spots you, or online communities like Rise&Inspire. Fellow travelers don’t compete; they sync their rhythms with yours. Their presence whispers, “You’re not alone.”

During the 2023 Writers’ Strike, I saw strangers share resources, turning collective frustration into a movement. As poet John Donne  wrote, “No man is an island.” Elevation is a team sport.

The Sky: Dreamers Who Expand Your Vision

The sky is the limit? Not quite. Some people are the sky—visionaries like Malala Yousafzai or that local artist who turns trash into murals. They don’t just inspire; they dissolve ceilings, making you wonder, “What if I dared higher?”

When I interviewed a climate activist last year, she said, “Hope isn’t a passive wish. It’s a ladder we build together.” Sky people remind you that altitude isn’t about ego—it’s about perspective.

Your Turn: Who’s in Your Basket?

Elevation isn’t a solo journey. It’s a dance of ballast, burners, navigators, travelers, and sky. So today, ask yourself:

  • Who keeps me rooted?
  • Who sparks my courage?
  • Who helps me course-correct?
  • Who shares the ride?
  • Who makes me dream bigger?

At Rise&Inspire, we believe greatness is a group project. As you reflect, remember: The right crew doesn’t just lift you—they turn the act of rising into a shared art.

So, who’s in your balloon?

Understanding People

Who are your favorite people to be around?

Who do I like being around? While my personal preferences about friends aren’t that exciting, I’m more interested in how we connect. Understanding how we talk, share power, respect different cultures, and follow social rules helps us build better friendships and make everyone feel important.
Exploring How We Connect

Have you ever thought about who you like spending time with? It’s a simple question, but it leads to big ideas about how we interact with others.

When I think about it, my personal preferences about who I hang out with aren’t that interesting. I’m more interested in digging deeper into how we relate to each other.

Communication

Talking and listening are how we share thoughts and feelings. Understanding how we communicate helps us build better relationships and understand each other more.

Power

In any group, some people have more influence than others. This can affect how we act and feel around them. Exploring power helps us see who has control and how it impacts us.

Culture

Culture is the way we do things in different groups. It’s like our shared traditions and beliefs. Learning about each other’s cultures helps us respect and understand one another better.

Social Rules

We all follow certain rules in different situations. These rules can influence how we behave and feel. Sometimes, they can hold us back from being ourselves. It’s important to question these rules and be true to who we are.

In the end, asking who we like to be around leads us to explore how we connect with others. By understanding how we communicate, share power, respect culture, and follow social rules, we can build stronger relationships and create a more accepting world where everyone feels valued.
