Are you a leader or a follower?

I am neither just a leader nor a follower—I am an intentional contributor, choosing to lead with purpose and follow with wisdom when the moment calls.

This reflection challenges the conventional notions of leadership and following, inviting you to explore a more nuanced approach to influence and impact. Beyond the Labels:

Are You a Leader, a Follower—or Something Greater?

By: Johnbritto Kurusumuthu, Founder & Editor-in-Chief, Rise&Inspire

“Are you a leader or a follower?”

The question is deceptively simple. It seems to box human potential into two rigid categories—one who leads, or one who follows. But life, growth, and purpose rarely fit into neatly labeled boxes. At Rise&Inspire, where motivation and positivity fuel every thought, I invite you today to step beyond the question—and into something deeper.

What If You’re Neither? Or Both?

Leadership isn’t always about being in front. And following isn’t always about submission. Some of the greatest changemakers in history were followers first—listeners, learners, observers—before they ever led.

Conversely, some of the most powerful leaders know when to step back, be silent, and follow a cause bigger than themselves.

Maybe the real question is: “Do you respond to life with intention?”

The Rise of the Intentional Contributor

In our blog’s journey over the last two years, I’ve seen a new archetype emerge—neither traditional leader nor passive follower. Let’s call it the Intentional Contributor.

This person chooses how to lead and when to follow—not out of habit, but out of wisdom.

They lead when purpose demands a voice.

They follow when humility requires silence.

They question systems but build bridges.

They shine without seeking the spotlight.

Isn’t that what growth truly is? A dynamic dance between influence and introspection.

Reflections from the Rise&Inspire Journey

When I founded Rise&Inspire, I wasn’t stepping up to “lead” in the conventional sense. I wasn’t following anyone either. I was answering a call—a calling to elevate, to empower, to awaken. And sometimes, that meant taking initiative; other times, it meant learning from others, surrendering to process, and allowing grace to guide.

Leadership is not a crown.

Following is not a chain.

Both are choices in service of growth.

In Nature, Who Leads?

Watch a murmuration of starlings or a school of fish. No one bird leads the whole sky. No one fish charts the ocean’s map. Yet together, they create art in motion.

Perhaps that’s us—humans navigating a shared journey of impact and purpose. Sometimes we lead. Sometimes we follow. And sometimes, we just flow.

So, What Am I?

I am a student of life, a guide for the willing, a voice for the silent, and a listener of the unheard. I lead when necessary. I follow when wise. But always, I rise. And I inspire.

That’s what Rise&Inspire stands for—not categories, but convergence.

Call to Action: Reframe the Question

Instead of asking yourself, “Am I a leader or a follower?”, ask this:

“Where am I needed most—at the front, the middle, or the foundation?”

“Am I showing up with integrity, courage, and purpose?”

Because the world doesn’t just need leaders or followers.

It needs builders. It needs lifters. It needs you.

Key Takeaway:

Don’t be limited by titles. Be guided by values. Whether you lead, follow, or walk beside—walk with purpose.

Are You Leading the Way or Holding the Line?

Are you a leader or a follower?

In blogging, some lead with new ideas, while others support by engaging and sharing. Leadership means having a vision and inspiring others, while followership is about contributing and connecting. Both roles are important, and you can be both at different times. Keep being active, connecting, and making a difference in the blogging community.
Finding Your Role in the Blogging World

Leading the Charge, or Holding the Fort? Why You Can Be Both in the Blogging World

The blogosphere is a vibrant landscape, teeming with unique voices and perspectives. But within this community, a question often pops up: Are you a leader or a follower?

The truth is, the distinction isn’t always black and white. Many bloggers, myself included, find themselves somewhere in the beautiful grey area – exhibiting traits of both leadership and followership depending on the situation.

Natural Leaders, Passionate Supporters

Some bloggers naturally gravitate towards leadership positions. They set the pace with innovative ideas, spark discussions with thought-provoking posts, and foster a sense of community. They’re the ones running collaborative projects, hosting challenges, and actively advocating for fellow bloggers.

However, a strong blogosphere thrives not just on leaders, but also on passionate supporters. These are the folks who leave insightful comments, share your work on social media, and offer encouragement and feedback. They’re the backbone of any thriving online community.

The Leadership Lens: Are You Inspiring Change?

So, how do you know if you’re a leader in the blogging world?

Here are some key aspects to consider:

Vision: Do you have a clear vision for your blog and the impact you want to create?

Influence: Do your posts spark conversations and inspire others to take action?

Initiative: Are you proactive in starting new projects or collaborations?

Communication: Do you effectively articulate your ideas and engage your audience?

Empowerment: Do you encourage others to share their voices and participate in the community?

Beyond Titles: Actions Speak Louder

Ultimately, leadership isn’t defined by a title or position; it’s about your actions and behaviors. Are you inspiring others? Are you driving positive change within your niche? If so, then you’re leading, regardless of whether you’re the one spearheading a project or the one cheering the loudest on the sidelines.

The Beauty of Duality

The beauty of the blogging world lies in its ability to accommodate both leaders and followers. You can be a vocal advocate for a cause one day and a supportive follower in another online community the next.

Embrace your strengths, whether it’s initiating discussions or fostering a supportive environment. Remember, a thriving blogosphere needs both the guiding lights and the unwavering support system. So, keep creating, keep connecting, and keep inspiring, because in this online space, your influence, big or small, can make a real difference.

What about you? Do you see yourself as a leader, a follower, or a beautiful blend of both in the blogging world? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
