WHY DO I ADMIRE A WOMAN FROM ANCIENT ALEXANDRIA ABOVE ALL OTHERS?
BECAUSE SHE STOOD AT THE CROSSROADS OF CIVILIZATION, WHERE KNOWLEDGE AND COURAGE INTERSECTED. SHE WAS A BEACON OF INTELLECT IN A WORLD THAT OFTEN SILENCED WOMEN. WHETHER SHE WAS A PHILOSOPHER, A MATHEMATICIAN, A SCIENTIST, OR A TEACHER, SHE DEFIED THE EXPECTATIONS OF HER TIME.
SHE DID NOT YIELD TO DOGMA, NOR DID SHE SHRINK FROM CONTROVERSY. SHE SPOKE TRUTH IN A CITY THAT REVERED LEARNING BUT FEARED THOSE WHO CHALLENGED THE STATUS QUO. IN AN AGE WHEN BOOKS WERE TREASURES AND IDEAS COULD GET YOU KILLED, SHE CHOSE TO THINK FREELY AND LIVE BRAVELY.
HER NAME MAY BE HYPATIA, OR SHE MAY BE ONE OF COUNTLESS OTHERS WHOSE STORIES WERE LOST TO HISTORY. BUT IN HER, I SEE WISDOM WITHOUT ARROGANCE, STRENGTH WITHOUT CRUELTY, AND A LOVE FOR KNOWLEDGE THAT STILL BURNS ACROSS CENTURIES.
I ADMIRE HER BECAUSE SHE PROVES THAT INTELLECTUAL POWER NEEDS NO APOLOGY, THAT DIGNITY CAN WITHSTAND PERSECUTION, AND THAT TRUE LEGACY IS WRITTEN NOT JUST IN BOOKS, BUT IN THE COURAGE TO THINK BEYOND ONE’S TIME.

A Candle in the Dark: Why My Favourite Historical Figure Is Not Who You’d Expect

When faced with the question, “Who is your favourite historical figure?”, most minds drift toward the grand: kings and queens, revolutionaries, inventors, or saints. The Napoleons and the Gandhis. The Curies and the Churchills. All of them are magnificent in their own ways.
But let me take you somewhere unexpected.
Let me tell you about Hypatia of Alexandria—a woman whose name history nearly tried to erase, but whose light refuses to be dimmed.
More Than a Philosopher
Hypatia was born around 360 AD in Roman Egypt, a time when Alexandria was one of the most vibrant intellectual centres of the world. She wasn’t just a philosopher. She was a mathematician, an astronomer, and the head of the Neoplatonic school of Alexandria—teaching men at a time when women were often forbidden from learning, let alone leading.
In a world that said “no,” she didn’t ask for “yes.” She simply did.
That is the kind of spirit Rise&Inspire stands for. “Strive to elevate in life.” Hypatia didn’t strive for power, popularity, or praise. She strived for knowledge, truth, and harmony between reason and faith. In that, she elevated not just her own life—but lit a torch for others to follow.
A Martyr for the Mind
Hypatia lived in an era boiling with religious and political tension. As Christianity rose to power, the ancient institutions of learning—pagan temples and libraries—began to fall. Hypatia, a symbol of classical knowledge and free thought, became a threat to the rising tide of orthodoxy. In 415 AD, she was brutally murdered by a mob, her flesh scraped off with tiles and oyster shells—an act of unspeakable violence, meant to silence reason itself.
But you know what?
It didn’t work.
Her death was not the end of her influence. She became an eternal question mark in history—a haunting reminder of what we lose when we fear what we do not understand. A silent warning against letting dogma eclipse dialogue. A call to courage in the pursuit of truth.
Why Hypatia?
So why, among all the titans of history, do I choose Hypatia?
Because she represents resistance through grace.
Because her life echoes a fundamental truth I believe in: Knowledge is not just power—it is freedom.
Because, in a world that still struggles with gender equality, religious tolerance, and the balance between science and spirit, Hypatia feels more relevant today than ever.
And perhaps most of all, because she reminds me of you, dear reader.
Of every soul that visits Rise&Inspire not just for pretty quotes or momentary motivation—but to rise, really rise, through understanding, truth, and purposeful living.
A Personal Reflection
Writing this post made me realise that this prompt wasn’t really asking for a name or a date. It was asking me to show you the kind of person I aspire to be—and the kind of people I hope we’re all becoming.
