Have I Let Go of Tradition, or Has Tradition Let Go of Me?

What traditions have you not kept that your parents had?

I’ve let go of outward rituals like lighting the oil lamp or observing fasts, but I’ve kept the inner values—discipline, reflection, and faith—in new forms.

I grew up in a home steeped in quiet rituals—oil lamps at dawn, sacred chants, fasts observed not for health, but for holiness.

Today, those visible acts are gone from my life. I no longer follow them in form. But their spirit lives on—in silence, intention, and purpose.

Tradition didn’t vanish. It transformed. I light a journal instead of a lamp. I reflect inwardly, not ritually. What I’ve let go is the shell—what I’ve kept is the soul.

Some traditions don’t survive unchanged. They evolve—or they guide from within.

What Family Traditions Have You Chosen to Let Go?

What traditions have you not kept that your parents had?

While I deeply respect the dedication and discipline my parents taught me, I’ve chosen a more balanced and fulfilling approach to life.

Dear Readers,

In a previous blog post dated August 2, 2023, I reflected on the WordPress prompt, “What traditions have you not kept that your parents had?” This prompt, revisited today, resonates deeply with me as it explores the delicate balance between honouring our past and embracing change.

My father, a dedicated police officer, and my strict yet loving mother instilled values of discipline, integrity, and hard work. While we respect their legacy, we’ve chosen to adapt some traditions, finding flexibility and balance essential for our happiness. The loss of my dear sister further emphasized the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones.

By blending tradition with innovation, we honour our roots while paving our unique paths. Our journey is a testament to the beauty of change, fostering happiness and contentment in our lives.

Thank you for joining me in reflecting on these cherished memories and experiences.

Warm regards,

A Journey of Evolving Traditions

What traditions have you not kept that your parents had?

I’ve chosen not to adhere to some of the strictness my parents upheld. While my father’s legacy of service and my mother’s discipline shaped us, we’ve embraced flexibility and balance, cherishing family bonds and finding happiness in our unique path.

Preface

Traditions are customs and beliefs passed down through generations in a community or society, holding cultural and historical significance. They shape the group’s identity and values, encompassing religious rituals, family celebrations, seasonal events, and specific behaviours in various situations. These traditions foster a sense of continuity, unity, and shared experiences within the community.

The question “What traditions from your parents’ generation have you chosen not to follow?” appears suitable in this context as well.

It encourages people to share their personal experiences with traditions and how they evolved or changed across generations. Reflecting on their family’s customs and practices, people discuss potential differences or adaptations that have occurred over time.

Introduction

In life, we often find ourselves at the crossroads of preserving the past while embracing the future. Our parents, with their unique experiences and beliefs, shape the foundation of our upbringing, passing on traditions that define our family’s identity. However, as time moves forward, we may choose to adapt some of these traditions while letting go of others.

In this blog post, I share my personal experience of how my family, with a police officer father and a strict housewife mother, has evolved and embraced change, leading us to live a happy and content life.

A Legacy of Service

My father, a dedicated police officer, instilled in us the values of discipline, integrity, and serving others. He was committed to his duty and taught us the importance of responsibility and accountability. However, while we deeply respect his legacy of service, we have chosen different career paths. Despite not following in his footsteps, we have incorporated his teachings of honesty and compassion into our lives.

The Role of Tradition and Community

Growing up in a community with its unique set of traditions, we have always appreciated the sense of belonging and unity it brought. Our family has gladly continued to uphold certain cultural practices and celebrations that foster togetherness and harmony. These traditions serve as a reminder of our roots and heritage, connecting us to generations past while strengthening our bonds with the present.

The Impact of Loss

The passing of my dear sister left a profound mark on our family. Her absence made us realize the importance of cherishing every moment with our loved ones. This tragic event urged us to reevaluate our priorities and be grateful for the time we have together. It taught us to show more love and support to one another, cherishing the memories we shared with our beloved sister.

Breaking Free from Strictness

My mother, a strict and disciplined woman, undoubtedly shaped our character and instilled in us a strong work ethic. However, as we grew older, we realized that being overly rigid hindered our growth and happiness. We chose to embrace a more balanced approach, understanding the value of flexibility and allowing room for personal growth and self-expression. By doing so, we have found a sense of liberation that has led us to live more fulfilling lives.

Embracing Happiness and Contentment

In the end, the essence of our journey lies in the pursuit of happiness and contentment. Despite not adhering to every tradition or habit our parents had, we are grateful for the foundation they provided us. We have learned to appreciate the beauty of change, allowing us to be the architects of our destinies. By striking a balance between preserving our heritage and embracing progress, we have found a profound sense of peace and joy.

Conclusion

Life is a beautiful tapestry of experiences and transformations, and our family’s journey is a testament to the power of embracing change. While we honour the legacy of our police officer father and strict housewife mother, we have chosen to pave our paths, blending tradition with innovation. By cherishing the memories of our late sister and finding happiness and contentment in the present, we have forged a unique identity that brings us closer as a family.

Let us all embrace the beauty of change, creating a legacy that resonates with our hearts and enriches the lives of generations to come.
